Day 24-26 - Khon Kaen

30 °C

Monday we woke up at 8.30am, still feel knackered from the previous day's antics & had a 70BT cooked breakfast each at the guesthouse, whilst I tucked into a book I had acquired from the shelves by Terry Prachett entitled 'The Colour of Magic'. Afterwards at Davids suggestion we set off for a long walk to find the Lao Embassy to sort our visas so we found a photoshop to get some passport photos done (6 for 100BT) & set off. Halfway there I stupidly failed to notice a huge metal traffic sign acrss the pavement & sliced my head on it! We returned to the guesthouse & I treated the gash & took a nap.
An hour later we ate snacks Vix had kindly bought whilst I was unconscious (crisps & buns from the Family Mart) & went to find the Post Office to send off postcards & I bought a really nice silk shirt from one of the market stalls for 150BT. Our next mission to find the Ferang (foreigner) area of town was a failure leaving us both shattered & fed up so we settled for dinner ate Pizza & Bake where we had noodles\marcaroni & a beer. Back at the guesthouse we were abit bored so David suggested we go for a drink at Roma down the road where apparently a live band play every night. We got there & had beer but there was no band, just various old schol tunes blaring out so I kicked Vix's ass at hangman instead.

Tuesday we had a cooked breakfast again at our guesthouse & wisely took a tuk tuk to the Lao embassy for 40BT. Sorting our visas was dead easy & fifteen minutes after filling in the form & handing over 1500BT each we had them & were on our way back into town. We chilled at a local park & went in search of the Sony repair centre to get a quote for my camera that I had damaged a few days ago on the way to the Elephant Sanctuary. It proved harder than finding the ferang area & several hours wandering past the three shopping malls & down side streets we found it but couldn't get an engineer report at that time so we gave up. Vix bought an icecream from KFC & we looked at some cameras, buying some interesting green noodle things from a street seller. After I had a snooze (we need siestas in this heat) we ate the noodles which were some kind of curious sweet dish in wraps tasting like candy floss & had tea at the guesthouse.

Wednesday we had our usual cooked breakfast & took a tuk tuk to Fairy Plaza where Vix bought a book for 230BT & we picked up an engineer's report from the Sony repair centre. We then walked to Kosa\Tucom Plaza found the cameras too expensive & caught a sangthew to Lake Khon Kaen for lunch on the lake where we watched a couple feed the multitude of coi carpe & catchfish bread, followed by spending 1.5hrs at the museum. We caught a sangthew back into town & ate various dishes at the night market - beef noodle soup, pork satay, fried bananas & a sickly sweet coconut syrup dessert. Yum!
